Staff crunch keeps cancer ward shut at Medical College Hospital

Proposal to create pool of nurses still pending

KOZHIKODE: The newly built haemato-oncology ward is yet to open to patients at the Medical College Hospital (MCH) here — even after six months since its inauguration.
The new ward, built spending '75 lakh of T.N Seema MP’s funds was a demand since long, but now, shortage of nurses is the hindrance.
“We need at least eight nurses for it. If we get four, we can manage. Hopefully, new nurses will be assigned by Monday,” Medical College Hospital principal Dr P.V. Narayanan said.
At least 40 patients admitted to this ward are now accommodated in the general medicine ward already crammed with patients.
The haematooncology ward consists of two wards, each having 20 beds. The women’s ward doesn’t have an ICU or even toilet facilities.
The MCH, in general, has been facing a shortage of nurses for long. A proposal to create a pool nurses comprising permanent and the daily-wage staff besides those recruited by the Hospital Development Committee (HDC) has not been materialised. It was envisioned to assign nurses to each ward from the pool.
The new ward for children and adults under one roof will provide better care and treatment for patients with leukemia, thalassemia, hemophilia, sickle cell anemia and similar diseases.
