Rebels taunt main parties

UDF, LDF make last-minute efforts to persuade dissidents
THIRUVANANTHPAURAM: With rebels refusing to pull out from the fray on the last date for the withdrawal of nominations, almost all major political parties are facing rebel menace across the state.
The UDF has the maximum number of rebels in the state while the LDF too has its share of dissidents.
Since the rebels pose a serious threat to the electoral prospects of official candidates, leaders are making desperate efforts to get them retired from contest.
Malappuram: In Malappuram, the UDF is facing rebel menace in at least 25 panchayats where Muslim League and Congress candidates are face to face. In Karuvarakkund district panchayat division, Mathew Sebastian of Kerala Congress (J) is taking on the official UDF candidate T. P. Ashrafali.
In Vazhakkad division of district panchayat, Abdul Muneeb Akkode, a rebel candidate, is pitted against UDF's Rohil. Chundayil Muhammedali, husband of former district panchayat member, is contesting from Panakkad division as a rebel candidate against Muslim League.
A section of Congress workers have formed Janakeeya Vikasana Munnani and fielded rebels in 10 seats of the newly formed Parappanagadi municipality.

However, the LDF faces major rebel headache in panchayats. There are 33 rebels in eight panchayats and one of the muncipalities in the district.

Kottayam: The Congress and KC(M) candidates are contesting against each other in all wards of Uzhavoor and Marangattupally grama panchayat.
The candidates of these parties are also pitted against each other in nine wards of Kangazha panchayat.
