Mallika Sarabhai voices dissent but won’t return Padma award
She was in the town for a dance performance held on Friday
THRISSUR: Danseuse and social activist Mallika Sarabhai has urged artists and writers in Kerala to protest “the move by fringe elements to hinder freedom of expression”.
Participating in a debate at the Sahitya Akademi Hall here on Saturday, she said Kerala’s silence when the space of free speech and pluralism being shrunk was suicidal.
“Our mouths are being zi-pped up, and it is high time we protested,” she said.
“I congratulate writer Nayantara Sahgal, who first decided to return her Akademi award, leading to a slew of prominent writers (to follow),” she said.
However, talking to reporters on the sidelines, she said she would not return the Padma Bhushan she got in 2010 as that was not her mode of protest.
“I have been protesting since the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992 and had moved Supreme Court over the genocide in Gujarat. I consider the award as recognition and won’t be returning it. Artists have their language of protest,” she said. She was in the town for a dance performance held on Friday.
