Changanassery declared first legally literate town

Speaking at a function held at the Archbishop Mar Kavukattu hall at the SB College here, the Governor said: “This is a historic occasion. The Changanassery model should be developed at the national level.

Everyone should learn from the achievement of the town in making the citizenry legally literate. Now after learning the basic legal lessons, the public should be empowered regarding their fundamental duties,” the Governor said.

The legal literacy programme christened the Total Eradication of the Legal Illiteracy Mission for Changanassery (TELIMEC) was conducted under the aegis of the Taluk Legal Service Society in which more than 20,000 people belonging to the 37 wards of the municipality attained legal literacy.

A sustained three-month campaign was done by at least 25 advocates of the bar, and 250 National Service Scheme volunteers belonging to three colleges in the town limit.

Kerala High Court Judge Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan presided over the meeting. High Courtg judge C.K. Abdul Rahim, District and Sessions Judge P.K. Lakshmanan, Changanassery first class juicial magistrate and Taluk Legal Services Society chairman V. Udayakumar and TELIMEC convener G. Madhukumar were present on the occasion.
