Painting before ABCs
Artist Sachin Jaltare talks about his first job, his first art show
Sachin Jaltare has been on a journey of self-discovery ever since he moved to the city in the early 90s. From then till today, Sachin has not only changed his medium but has also changed how he looks at art.
Q.When was your first art show? When did you sell your first artwork?
It was in the year 2000. It was a group art show and I had displayed 5-6 artworks, all related to nature. I sold my first artwork was many, many years before my first artshow. It was an A4 sized work and I sold it for Rs 1,500.
Q.What was your first job?
I moved to Hyderabad in 1991 because I got a job at an ad agency. I joined the firm as an illustrator and later went on to become a visualiser. But I realised that I wasn’t feeling satisfied with my work and art was my calling, so I pursued it.
Q.When did you first start painting?
Don’t really remember the age, but I know this — I started drawing even before I learnt my ABCDs. My father was an artist himself so whenever he would step out of the room, I would use his paints and paint all over the walls. He never yelled at me, instead he would tell me what was nice and where I could improve (laughs).
Q.Where do you see yourself five years from now?
I believe in living in the moment. In the present. So five years is something I can’t think about.
Q. Any regrets?
Absolutely none. I’ve learnt that you get what you need at the right time. Also, even if I do make a mistake, I know it will only be for my best.
