ISL 2: Steven Mendoza shines again as Chennai thump Mumbai

Chennaiyin have now scored 10 goals against Mumbai City in their three meetings overall

Mumbai: Chennaiyin FC continued their domination over Mumbai City FC with a 2-0 thrashing at D.Y. Patil Stadium here on Friday. Colombian forward Steven Mendoza followed up his hat-trick in the previous ISL game against FC Goa with a brace to expose the host’s inconsistent defence yet again.

Chennaiyin have now scored 10 goals against Mumbai City in their three meetings overall and conceded just one. Searching for an elusive win, Mumbai City made six changes again by drafting Sunil Chhetri, Subrata Paul and defender Lalchu-mmawia Fanai straight into the playing XI after their engagements with the national team.

Besides, Ashutosh Mehta and Frederic Piquionne started again after featuring in the first game while Tunisian midfielder Selim Benachour got his first start. Nicolas Anelka seems to be enjoying the managerial role as he wasn’t even part of 21-man line-up issued by the home side. But with just one point in three games, the Ranbir Kapoor co-owned franchise have to look for a settled squad and goal scorers.

A much more composed Chennaiyin made just one change with Italian defender Alessandro Potenza coming for Bernard Mendy. Chhetri was making his ISL debut and he had a chance to make it memorable but his header on a corner kick went over The host’s maintained pressure but were not able to seize the early initiative.

A miscommunication after an hour of play led Brazil’s Elano to intercept the ball near goal and he passed it to Mendoza who had all the time in the world to tap it in.
