‘Dilli’ series INA seminar begins
KOZHIKODE: Vice Admiral Anup Singh (Retd), the former Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command inaugurated the annual ‘Dilli’ series INA Seminar on “Naval Weaponry through the Ages” at INA, Ezhimala, Kannur on Friday.
Addressing the audience, Mr Singh said that a nation’s strategic position was primarily determined by two factors viz., its economic prowess and military might.
“Navy is an effective instrument of the state, and hence equipping the Navy with requisite and apt weaponry is very critical in achieving set strategic goals”, he added.
The seminar proceedings commenced with an in-house introductory movie on “evolution of Naval weaponry’ since the ancient times’ followed by the opening address by Vice Admiral Ajit Kumar P, Commandant.
Dr Oliver Noone explained about the ‘Naval Battle of Calicut’ of 1503- the first recorded naval line of battle with broadside guns, fought between the fleet of Zamorins of Calicut and the Portuguese armada led by Vasco da Gama.
The two-day seminar is being attended by eminent academicians and luminaries like Ambassador Talmiz Ahmad, a former diplomat and Director General of Indian Council of World Affairs; Dr Oliver Noone, reputed historian; Prof Anirudh Deshpande from Delhi University, in addition to senior officers from the Navy. The programme will conclude on Saturday.
