KSRTC bus gutted in accident

Bus knocked down four two-wheelers

KOZHIKODE: A KSRTC bus turned into a burning inferno on the busy Mavoor Road on Friday afternoon when the bus lost control, hit a median, a wall and then caught fire. The bus also knocked down four two-wheelers and six persons have suffered injuries.

The injuries of a two-wheeler rider, whose bike got caught in between the bus and the wall is said to be serious.

Four injured persons, including the KSRTC driver Vijayan Vengara have been admitted in a private hospital and two others have been admitted to Kozhikode Medical College.

Police said a KSRTC bus bound for Malappuram, started from the KSRTC stand around 3.45 pm and when it reached near the Indian Coffee House on Mavoor Road, hardly 200 metres away,it hit the median and lost control.

The bus then hit the two-wheelers and stopped after hitting a side wall. The bus then caught fire and the passengers rushed outside. Fortunately there were only four passengers in the bus.

The fire spread very fast and the bus was completely charred before the fire tenders could douse the flames.

“Fortunately, the road was not very crowded and there only very a few passengers in the bus. When the bus caught fire, everyone started running away from the bus and there was nobody to rescue the injured,” Gireesh Kumar, a passerby said.

Eye witnesses said that when the bus hit the median, the diesel tank got damaged and there was a diesel leak leading to the fire. Traffic on this busy stretch came to a standstill for nearly two hours as police diverted the vehicles from Mavoor Road junction and Bank Road junction.

“The bus was only 5 to 6 years old and had all fitness certificates. The bus driver tried to avoid hitting a car that had entered to the main road from pocket road suddenly. It then lost control and hit a pillar on the median and moved to the other side of the road. A two wheeler rider coming in the opposite direction got under the vehicle. The bike petrol tank was damaged and the petrol leak had caused the fire," Mohammed Safarullah, KSRTC Zonal Manager told DC.
