Kerala Technological University, US school to fight cyber threats

This was agreed at a workshop on trusted systems organised jointly by the two here recently

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, formerly Kerala Technological University, and the US-based Stevens Institute of Technology have decided to form a core group for fighting cyber and networking threats.

This was agreed at a workshop on trusted systems organised jointly by the two here recently. KTU pro-vice-chancellor M. Abdul Rahman said the outcome of the workshop also forged the way for larger collaboration opportunities between the US and India in the areas of research and innovation in trusted systems.

“A core group of experts from both sides will work in this area,” he told Deccan Chronicle.

“The rapid growth in internet connectivity, mobile computing, Internet of Things (IOT) and cyber-physical systems will have a profound impact on applications like e-Governance, connected healthcare, financial systems and tactical networks”.

Persistent attacks on such complex networked systems continue to expose their vulnerabilities to advanced persistent threats (APT), social engineering attacks and denial of service attacks exploit software, hardware, socio-cultural and policy weaknesses.

As a result, the design, analysis, development and deployment of trusted systems continue to pose major challenges to the technical, policy and consumer communities.

“Technology is not enough for a trusted system. A security program must include other managerial controls, means of recovering from breaches of security, and above all, awareness and acceptance by people.”

Recent attacks on government websites were also discussed at the workshop, which also decided to work together to develop innovative solutions to address this issue that infringe our national security and people’s privacy.

“The same information technologies that helped the country to launch a new era of empowerment and inclusion has now become a serious threat to the right to live and work safely and securely in the digital world,” he said.

“The outcome of this workshop will be a strong working relationship between researchers at KTU and Stevens.”
