College suspends magazine editor for offensive lingo

The College management has also withdrawn the magazine

KOLLAM: A college magazine editor was suspended from the college for allegedly including derogatory slangs in the magazine that insulted women.

Bibin Bobichan, the editor of the college magazine of St. Johns College in Anchal, was suspended after complaints that the magazine contained offensive words which had a double meaning used by contemporary youth. The College management has also withdrawn the magazine.

The college magazine ‘seasons 2015’ contained a section under the name ‘campus dictionary’ that listed such words.

“The words mentioned in the magazine were not that severe but the college took action against the editor based on complaints received by the students,” said Father James Setphen Kurikkal, St. John’s College principal.

Meanwhile, the students allege that the editorial board that includes staff members did not prevent the publication of the magazine although they could have identified the presence of such derogatory words. However, the editorial team including the Principal of the college could not find such words while proof reading.

“The words that have attracted controversy were not present at the time when the student editor presented the proof copy of the magazine before the editorial board,” he said.
