Ban polythene production below 40 microns: Hyderabad High Court

The NGO sought total ban on plastic carry bags
Visakhapatnam: Responding to a writ petition filed by a Visakhapatnam based NGO working on animal protection and care, the High Court has asked both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments to identify the plastic industries manufacturing carry bags of below 40 micron and ensure their closure by six months.
A Division Bench of the High Court issued the order after hearing the petition of Visakha Society for Protection and Care of Animals which had sought ban on plastic carry bags of all kinds irrespective of its thickness, submitting affidavits how it was posing threat to the human health, environment and especially to the animal and water bodies.
Expressing concern and unhappiness over the steps taken and implementation part on the government side, the Bench said some more effort need to be taken in a time bound manner to stop the menace.
Though the NGO sought total ban on plastic carry bags, the Bench replied that it had been scientifically proved that use of plastic materials below 40 micron is only absolutely hazardous.
The court has also directed the authorities concerned to take out mass awareness programme through electronic and print media to sensitise people against disposing garbage or waste material on any public places and streets. The petitioner, Pradeep Kumar Nath, said any order that would help to reduce plastic menace is welcome. “We wanted complete ban on the plastic carry bag as it is harmful for environment,” he said.
