Ahead of GHMC polls, sops galore

The ruling TRS announced a slew of sops for voters on Thursday
Hyderabad: Months before the GHMC council elections, the ruling TRS announced a slew of sops for voters on Thursday. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has agreed in principle for a nominal imposition of property tax, not exceeding Rs 101 for about 5 lakh houses, currently the owners of which pay a maximum of Rs 1,200. The CM also directed the GHMC to take up 1,000 km of roads for black topping (BT) and 400 km for white topping. The work, for which Rs 500 crore has been allocated, will have to be completed within a month from Thursday.
“Many roads in the Twin Cities have been damaged due to the rains. A list of all such roads must be prepared immediately so that necessary tenders can be called online and the work entrusted. Repairs should be carried out even at places where Metro Rail works are on. The chief engineer of National Highways has been asked to repair the highway network passing through the city. Similarly, roads that were handed over by the R & B department to the GHMC will have to be repaired,” the CM said.
White topping will be done on Paradise roads and Banjara Hills Road numbers 1, 2, 10, 12 and 45. “Attention should be given to small patches as well. The repair work should be in tune with modern technology so that they survive for a longer period,” Mr Rao added. The CM on Thursday also reviewed the issue of illegal constructions and said that despite BRS and LRS, such activity was still going on. He instructed GHMC officials to prepare a strategy as to how illegal constructions could be stopped.
Mr Rao also suggested a special flying squad wing that would be directly under the control and supervision of the GHMC commissioner and asked officials to come up with a strategy for its functioning.
