Nod to fill MBBS seats in Hyderabad

Deadline is October 20
Hyderabad: A division bench of the Hyderabad High Court, comprising Justice R. Subhash Reddy and Justice A. Shankar Narayana, on Wednesday directed the NTR University of Health Sciences at Vijayawada to fill up ‘A’ and ‘B’ category MBBS seats at the Malla Reddy Institute of Medical Sciences of the city, through counselling.
The bench was dealing with a petition by six MBBS aspirants seeking a direction to the university and the college to take up admissions under the convener quota.
The petitioners moved court after the college successfully challenged, in the Delhi High Court, the Medical Council of India order rejecting permission to take in students for the current academic year, citing lack of adequate infrastructure.
While suspending the rejection order of the MCI, Delhi High Court on September 30 permitted the college to fill up 150 seats as per the rules within 15 days.
The petitioners told the court that the college had an intake capacity of 150 seats and that it could take 75 seats each in the convener and management quotas.
They said the management, after getting Delhi HC order on September 30, had declared that 75 seats under the management quota were filled, but 75 seats under the convener quota remained vacant. They contended that the action of the college was not in accordance with rules and if time was given to fill the management quota, then the same should be applied to convener quota also.
The college management had said that it was ready to fill up 75 seats in the convener quota. The NTR varsity submitted that it had sought an explanation from the college on filling up the 75 seats without notice to the convener.
While directing the varsity to take up admission into ‘A’ and ‘B’ category seats through counselling, the bench said the admission process should be completed by October 20 and the students should be informed that their admissions are subject to the final result of the petition pending adjudication.
