Concussions in childhood may increase alcoholism risk in girls

However the same effect was not observed in males

Even a head bump can make you more susceptible to alcohol abuse later in life, according to experts – if you happen to be a female. A recent study has found that women who suffered a mild closed-head injury even in childhood are more likely to misuse alcohol and link drinking with reward and pleasure, the Daily Mail reports.

Researchers at the Ohio State University also discovered that the same effect was not seen in males. They say that the risk is triggered by changes to nerve fibres in the brain that occur only after a concussion. The scientists added that although there was increased risk in girls, its effect was reversible.

Dr Zachary Well, who is an assistant professor of neuroscience at the same University, stressed on importance of effective medical care and rehabilitation in any case of childhood brain injury, according to the Daily Mail.
