Waste plant misses September deadline

The plant was first set up in 2011 spending Rs 7 crore

KOZHIKODE: The waste water disposal plant at Medical College Hospital here is yet to be functional despite the assurance of the authorities. They had given a deadline of September to commence the operation of the plant, on which a whopping Rs 14 crore had already been spent.

“About 90 per cent of the work has been over. The plant will be functional soon,” said MCH principal, Dr. P.V. Narayanan.

The plant was first set up in 2011 spending Rs 7 crore. But it was defunct due to the delay in the laying of pipeline system.

Then it was operated on an experimental basis, hut the whole plant was not functional. Again Rs 70 lakh was spent for the maintenance work.

The next hindrance was the confusion on the route through which the waste water would be pumped out.

The Mavoor road-Kanoli canal route was chosen and Kerala Water Authority laid the pipe at a cost of Rs 6.15 crore. The MCH, college and allied hospitals were well-connected by the pipe line.

The two plants have a joint capacity of four million litres of water for treatment.Currently, four million litres of water is being used in MCH daily and of this, 3.2 million litres had been pumped out as waste water.

Though authorities have plans to make use of the treated water for gardening, nothing has happened.
