Tranquilised tiger dies on way to hospital at Cheeyambam

Cheeyambam, the forest region, was in the grip of fear following its attacks on the cattle

KALPETTA: A ten-year-old male tiger, which was given tranquillisation dozes, died while it was being taken for treatment at Cheeyambam, Wayanad, on Tuesday.

It had become a cattle lifter after it was disabled by fights among the tigers, according to forest officers. Cheeyambam, the forest region, was in the grip of fear following its attacks on the cattle.

The animal, which was spotted near a tribal settlement at Cheeyambam near Sulthan Bathery, was tracked by the forest staff. An expert team headed by Dr Jijumon reached the spot by 10 a.m. Though Dr Jijumon shot seven tranquilising dozes, the attempts proved futile.

Dr Arun Zachariah, a specialist, reached the spot by 3 p.m. and tranquilised it. However, it died on way to the veterinary college, Pookkode. The carcass was full of wounds, said Wayanad Wildlife Warden Mohanan Pillai.

Chethalayam range officer P. Ranjithkumar and Kurichiad range officer Raman also were in the team.
