Navaratri sees changes in matchmaking trend
These days the children introduce their choice of partner to their families
Hyderabad: The nine-night, 10-day Navratri festival began on Tuesday. The coming days will be full of celebration and merriment as youngsters, dressed in their traditional or Western best, dance the nights way.
The celebrations are also a major matchmaking opportunity for members of the community. This matchmaking trend, however, has seen a sea change. While earlier it were the families who introduced the boy and girl to each other, these days the children introduce their choice of partner to their families.
Jasmine Shah, a software engineer explained, “The trend has taken a complete 360 degree turn. Now the boy and girl decide among themselves and parents have to only formally acknowledge the relationship. This was not so earlier.”
Apart from this, the dresses also have seen a huge change. From traditional attire, these days garba dancers often wear semi-Western, Bhangra dresses, skirts and also trousers. It is a mix and match scenario that sometimes takes away the essence from the festival, say some. To ensure continuity of traditions, senior women from the community ensure that they wear traditional garba costumes so that the new generation understands the need for the same.
