Chennai: Gang murders man in station
24-year-old stabbed for trying to stop gang from molesting woman
Chennai: A youth who questioned a gang that was molesting a vendor while she was feeding her infant on the Pallavaram railway station platform was murdered and his body was thrown on the railway track on Monday night.
The same gang had earlier robbed a railway commuter of his cash and mobile phone at knifepoint in the same premises. Shocked cops are hunting for the gang, which is responsible for a robbery, rape attempt and murder in a public place. The deceased was identified as John Santhakumar, 24, a painter.
At around 11 on Monday night, the gang of five, all in their early ’20s, had first threatened 30-year-old Sriramalu, a migrant worker, at knife point and snatched Rs 5,000 and the mobile phone he was carrying.
Within minutes the gang members surrounded a 20-year-old fruit vendor sitting on the platform with her child and started misbehaving with her.
Proud of my son, cries victim’s dad
“Though my son was not coming home regularly, we are proud of him as he died defending the dignity of a woman,” said Santhakumar, father of John, who received the body at the Chromepet GH after post-mortem.
On Monday night, while other commuters waiting for train at Pallavaram railway station preferred to look the other way when a gang molested a woman fruit vendor, John had the courage to intervene and tried to stop the gang and to rescue the woman.
When John intervened, the gang members released the woman and started attacking him. The culprits dragged him away, stabbed him and left him bleeding. After killing John, they disappeared.
As soon as the gang walked away, some onlookers started reacting and called the police. By the time police reached the scene, John was dead. John was a resident of Maraimalai Nagar, Kancheepuram, and used to go home occasionally. “He used to sleep in different railway stations and go to work. On Monday night, when he saw a woman vendor being attacked, he could not stand it and objected to it which resulted in his murder,” the police said.
Railway police said they were on the look out for the gang, led by one Karthik, suspected to be from Chetpet, in connection with a series of incidents at Pallavaram station.
