Maulana Azad National Urdu University officials quit amid students’ stir

Students protested a rule that prevents girl students from leaving the hostel after 7 pm

Hyderabad: Protesting students at the Maulana Azad National Urdu University on Monday secured the ‘resignation’ of chief warden Prof. Aziz Banu and proctor Prof. Abdul Wahid.

Hundreds of students, including girls, went on strike from 8 am demanding that the two officials resign. They later gheraoed the Vice-Chancellor and top officials at the university auditorium.

The students cited the shortage of hostels and the delay in opening the hostel which was complete, to seek their resignations. They also protested a rule that prevents girl students from leaving the hostel after 7 pm and a circular that stated that boys should not wear shorts or lungis outside the hostel.

Protests started after bid to block ex-VC visit to campus:

The university administration called in the police to disperse the protesting students at Manuu. The students alleged that the police tried to pick up some students but were prevent. Reports said a student was manhandled.


The university was calm until Saturday when Prof. Mohammad Miyan, a former vice-chancellor of the university came to inaugurate some buildings. When the university’s staff came to know about his visit, they protested along with some students at the university gate to prevent his entry, alleging that there were many irregularities during his tenure. According to those who protested on Saturday, the university’s proctor directed some students to take whatever action was required to push away protesters. Following this, students started pushing away protesters during which a student and some teachers were allegedly manhandled.


On Monday teachers wore black badges protesting against “instigation of students against their own teachers” and demanded removal of the Proctor, Provost and in-charge Registrar.
