Etela Rajender defends rice supplied to hostels
He accused the Telugu Desam of making baseless allegations
Hyderabad: Declaring that the rice supplied to government run social welfare hostels is fine, finance and civil supplies minister Etela Rajender accused the Telugu Desam of making baseless allegations against the government.
“For the first time in the country the TRS government is supplying fine rice to the students of social welfare hostels at a cost of Rs 642 crore. How can coarse rice be turned into fine rice through polishing? I haven't seen such technology. If TD leaders see irregularities and lodge a complaint the government will take action,” Rajender said.
Finance minister took exception to the allegations of T-TDP working president A. Revanth Reddy and others that the fine rice supplied to government hostels was nothing but polished coarse rice. “If they had stayed in hostels like me they would have understood the trauma. For the first time the government is providing fine rice to students. There are no complaints,” he asserted.
Etela Rajender said despite the denial of additional rice by the Centre the state is supplying six kg fine rice per head to all white ration card holders. “I made the request to the Chief Minister at the cabinet meeting and he accepted it. We have tightened the screws against hoarders. I had warned brokers too. We are supplying fine rice to all hostel inmates,” he said.
Narrating the miserable life in government social welfare hostels during his Schooling, he said then governments paid just Rs 40 per student per month towards mess charge and this came to just Rs 1.30 a day. The food used to be lousy. There were worms and pebbles at times. It was dreadful at Yakutpura hostel," he said. The Telangana government, he said, was against this and took steps to ensure adequate quality food to all hostel inmates.
