Smart ideas by students
The Smart City Hackathon at Bits-Pilani during their tech fest, Atmos, saw many ideas that impressed the judges. The two-day hackathon had 30 teams participate in the first day but only 15 got through to the next round.
Runners-up at the event, BBRIT students Pavan Kalyan, Sudheer Kumar and Shishma, came up with an idea for smart parking. Explaining their product, Pavan says, “We created a moveable sensor — a robot, that can detect a free parking space. People go to a mall and spend a lot of time trying to figure out a parking space. The robot will be hung on a wire on the ceiling and will direct drivers to a free parking space. People can even check it through GPS.”
Taking the third position was a group of six friends, from CVSR College of Engineering with their idea Smart Prepaid, a recharge card for your electricity bill. Meghana, a team member says, “You can insert the card in the meter. You have to recharge the card and according to the amount of electricity you consume, money gets deducted. When you have low balance, an alarm will go off. It will also give you an estimate of how much power you are using every day.”
They are also working on an idea to detect how much electricity each equipment in a house uses.
