Six foods that will keep your brain sharp

They also help you slash the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s in the future

Most people focus on diets aimed at weight loss and heart health but even the most complex and delicate organ in the human body – the brain – needs quality nutrition to work in an optimum condition. This is because it comprises structures that control almost every bodily function.

So, scientists have come up with a list of six key foods that will not only give you a sharper mind but also help you slash the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s in the future, reports the Daily Mail. These foods are:

1) Olive Oil: As olive oil contains about ten to 15 per cent saturated fat and a similar amount of polyunsaturated fat. These fatty acids are associated with a healthier heart and a sharper brain. Three tablespoons of extra-virgin oil daily should suffice, according to experts.

2) Citrus Fruit: Fruits like oranges, grapefruit and easy-peelers because they contain brain-protective flavanones, which will help you keep dementia at bay. It is advised to have an extra serving of fruits to your five a day.

3) Nuts: Rich in mono-saturated fats and vitamin E, they are beneficial for brain health. You can improve your cognition abilities by trying out a mix of 15g walnuts and 7.5g each of almonds and hazelnuts.

4) Fish: Omega-3 fatty acids, iodine and vitamin D are present in all seafood. It has even been proved by researchers that those who eat fish regularly actually have bigger brains. Doctors advise to have at least one portion of fish a week to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s by ten years.

5) Chocolate: The catechin compounds found in cocoa solids have a positive effect on our brains. In fact, a study even showed that two cups of hot chocolate a day can improve your thinking skills.

6) Berries: Blackberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, and black and red grapes have compounds called anthocyanins, which are good for the blood vessels to your brain.
