Tribal leader quits Telugu Desam coordinator post
Ms M. Manikumari, resigned as the coordinator of the Paderu constituency’s three-member committee on Sunday
Visakhapatnam: Upset with the state government for not doing anything about the release of the three abducted tribal TD leaders from the Maoists' clutches, TD tribal leader and former minister, Ms M. Manikumari, resigned as the coordinator of the Paderu constituency’s three-member committee on Sunday. In her statement to the media, Ms Manikumari stated: “The issue of the abducted three TD leaders was brought to the notice of minister Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu and district president of TD P. Chalapathi Rao, but they have not responded so far.”
The former minister also said that the abducted leaders had no links with the proposed bauxite mining and appealed to the Maoists to release them on humanitarian grounds.
Ms Manikumari also said that bauxite mining would affect the livelihood of tribals and would also damage the environment and affect the groundwater table.
The TD leader requested Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to stop the AP Mineral Development Corporation’s moves to take up bauxite mining. Meanwhile, coming down heavily on the TD government for not doing anything to get the three tribal leaders released, senior Congress leader and former minister, Mr P. Balaraju, demanded that Mr Naidu declare that the TD would not allow bauxite mining.
Sources in the police, meanwhile, said that uncertainty continued to loom large over the release of the three TD leaders of G.K. Veedhi mandal in Vizag Agency, Mr M. Balaiah Padal, Mr V. Balaiah and Mr M. Mahesh. The three were abducted by CPI Maoists from G.K. Veedhi area in Vizag Agency on Monday evening.
Leaders and activists of various tribal associations on Sunday, meanwhile, alleged that Vizag Rural cops had illegally arrested 34 tribals from Balapam area in Vizag Agency by branding them Maoist sympathisers. The arrested were produced before Court in Vizag city on Saturday and the court had ordered their release on self bonds. However, the tribals were yet to reach their hometown and the tribal leaders alleged that the cops might have not released them yet.
