Metro rail vaiduct built in 4 months

Construction completed without obstructing traffic at busy Punjagutta junction
Hyderabad: Despite being at a busy junction at the heart of the city, the Metro Rail viaduct at Punjagutta was built in four months by Larsen & Turbo Hyderabad Metro Rail. The 51-foot viaduct rises above the existing flyover and it entailed a lot of engineering challenges in design and execution. Mr N.V.S. Reddy, managing director of Hyderabad Metro Rail, said, “The existing Punjagutta flyover was 23-feet high and hence brainstorming sessions were held with L&T engineers to plan the viaduct as a double elevation. Work was completed without stopping traffic on the flyover.”
Keeping in mind future growth of traffic volumes, the central span of the existing flyover was designed as a 190-feet-long span supported by high-tensioned tendons. The double elevated viaduct is 420 feet long.
Mr Reddy added, “We could complete the work in four months as a safety net was provided so that no material fell on road users. Also an aesthetic value has been added to the viaduct by giving it a beautiful arch type design.”
The Hyderabad Metro Rail is one of the first metro project taken up in the PPP mode. The project got delayed after the government objected to the metro rail passing in front of Assembly building and heritage Sultan Bazaar market.
