Agitation escalates to hunger strike

Around 16,000 workers, majority of them women working in tea plantations, have been on strike leaving their families in grave financial crisis

WAYANAD: The joint council of trade unions will start a relay hunger strike in six centres of the district from Monday. The tea plantation workers have been on an agitation in the district demanding 20 percent bonus and wage hike for the last few weeks.

The agitators had started blocking important roads passing through the district, including NH 212, the busy Kozhikode-Bangalore National Highway, creating blocks in all highways.

But now the blockade has been stopped to ease the difficulties for the ordinary passengers.

INTUC leader P.K. Gopalan told DC that the government had failed to ensure justice for the workers.

“We will continue the strike till we receive justice from the government and managements,” said P. Gagarin, CITU leader.

Around 16,000 workers, majority of them women working in tea plantations, have been on strike leaving their families in grave financial crisis. Harrison’s Malayalam Limited has closed all their plantations.
