Widened roads bring respite in Vijayawada

More than 15 main roads in city have been widened for Dasara festival

Vijayawada: The commuters and heavy vehicle drivers in the city have expressed relief on Friday with the ongoing road extension and renovation works as the traffic hassles were reduced while connecting to the national highway, thanks to the Dasara festival and PM’s visit on October 22.

More than 15 main and busy roads were given a facelift and many with potholes were partially repaired keeping in view the traffic diversion during Dasara festival and Prime Minster Narendra Modi’s visit on October 22.

All the narrow and congested roads have been widened and also central dividers laid. The busy roads in Gunadala, Errakatta near Chitti-nagar, Gurunanak Colony Road and High School Road were extended.

The commuters, who always complain to the VMC about the constricted roads, expressed their happiness over the ongoing road-widening and repairing works, when DC contacted them.

College-going student Rajeevram, who daily commutes through Chittinagar junction to his college said, ‘It’s been a tough job to pass the Errakatta Road through BRTS Road. But after the VMC took up the repair works, traffic has reduced to half and can have smooth journey to Chitti-nagar junction.”

Not only Chittinagar, Gunadala Road, Milk Fact-ory Road, KT Road, Urmi-lanagar Road near bypass road have also been widened and repaired.

In addition to that, heavy vehicle drivers also expressed happiness that the newly laid roads will reduce traffic disturbance while reaching the national highway at the time of traffic diversion.

“The widened roads will leave a clear path for heavy vehicle drivers to reach the highway reducing the efforts to wait in heavy traffic,” a traffic police said.

“We have plans to repair all the roads that we have identified during our survey. We will complete all works in a week,” VMC commissioner Mr G. Veerapandian said.
