Besant Nagar promenade to be car free today
Mayor Saidai Duraisamy to join public in bicycle rally
Chennai: The city’s first car free Sunday is ramping up excitement ahead of its debut. The Besant Nagar promenade would become vehicle free between 6 am and 9 am on all Sundays here on out.
Mayor Saidai Duraisamy would lead the inaugural at 7 am, and is expected to join the public in a bicycle rally. Corporation commissioner Vikram Kapur is also expected to join in.
Representatives of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) told Deccan Chronicle that preparations are on.
Participants have been requested by the organisers to try and avoid private transportation as much as possible and have instead been asked to car pool or avail public transport or cycle to the venue.
“We would also request participants to bring drinking water in their own bottles and to not litter the spot with eatables and plastics,” said an ITDP representative. Aswathy Dilip of the ITDP said that 50 bicycles will be available for free rent and that interested participants can produce an identity card to avail the opportunity to bike the promenade.
Ambulance and medics will be on call while the promenade will also have tight security arrangements. Parking is expected to be a big problem, however. “It would have been nicer had they banned vehicles for the whole of Sunday. But, we Besant Nagar residents, are all pretty excited,” said Kamakshi Subramanian, a resident.
