19 Nagapattinam fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan navy
Sri Lankan naval personnel who were patrolling there surrounded the two boats and brought them to Kankesanthurai port
Nagapattinam: In another shocking incident, the Sri Lankan navy arrested 19 fishermen of Nagapattinam district when they were fishing in mid-sea off the Akkaraipettai shore here, along with two mechanised boats in the early hours of Saturday.
Official sources said that ten fishermen from Akkaraipettai fishermen's hamlet put out to sea on Monday last while nine others from nearby Keechankuppam fishermen's hamlet went into the sea on Thursday.
When they were fishing in mid-sea Southeast off the Kodiyakarai coast, Sri Lankan naval personnel who were patrolling there surrounded the two boats and brought them to Kankesanthurai port on Saturday morning, sources said.
The arrested fishermen's names were given as: Kamaraj (40), Ramachandran (40), Palanisamy (36) Balamurugan (30), Soundar (30) Kesavan (25) Subramani (30), Manonmani (45) Ravi (50), Ganesan (25) of Akkaraipettai and eight others - Ravi (42), Jayapal (35), Palanimurugan (26), Arumugam (30), Udhayan (25), Balachan-dran (30), Christhuraj (40), Kalidas (32) of Keechankuppam and Manikandan (25) of Nambiyar nagar fishermen's hamlet.
