12 per cent Muslim quota not yet in Telangana
Hyderabad: There will be no 12 per cent quota for Muslims in education and employment in Telangana in the near future.
Barely two days after Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao announced in the Legislative Assembly that the Telangana government would implement 12 per cent quota for Muslims in education and employment “very soon”, the government on Friday extended the term of the commission of inquiry studying socio-economic and educational status of Muslims by six more months, till March 31, 2016, giving clear indications that the “study exercise” would continue further.
The committee headed by retired IAS officer G. Sudhir was constituted in March this year to make recommendations on the 12 per cent quota and was expected to give its report within six months.
The delay meanwhile will result in Muslims not gaining from the enhanced quota in the ongoing recruitments being taken up by TSPSC and other recruitment agencies on a large scale. At present, Muslims are entitled to a 4 per cent quota, which was introduced by the YSR government in 2007. However, a case is pending in Supreme Court against this and the 4 per cent quota is being extended subject to the outcome of the case.
Minority leaders and students are upset with the delay in implementing the quota as promised by TRS in its manifesto during the 2014 Assembly elections even after being in power for more than 15
months.
