Lakhs of rupees spent on drain widening does not check flooding

Kozhikode: Heavy rain inundated the low-lying areas in Kozhikode on Friday and people living in low-lying areas have been asked to move to safer locations. More showers have been forecast due to a low pressure formation in the Arabian Sea.
The traffic on several city roads came to a standstill due to water-logging. The arterial Mavoor Road was flooded and motorists and pedestrians had to wade through knee-deep water.
The Kozhikode Corporation had spent several lakhs of rupees to widen the drains to prevent water-logging.
However, the district had a shortfall of about 23 percent during the south-west monsoon.
“More rain is welcome. We consider this as the onset of north-east monsoon which ideally should start on October 15 and continue till November 15. Rain during this period can be of help to balance the shortfall in south-west monsoon. But the early onset of north-east monsoon would not be of much use, unless it continues till November 15,” Dr. V.P. Dinesan, scientist at CWRDM, told DC.
Weather department sources said that the rain was due to a low-pressure formation in the Arabian Sea.
Met officials said heavy rainfall was likely to continue in the state till Tuesday. Kozhikode received 74.1 mm rainfall till 8.30 a.m. on Friday and 29 mm from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.
