Telangana plans to nominate KCR as Chancellor of Osmania University
Hyderabad: If the Telangana state education ministry has its way, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao could become the chancellor of Osmania and Kakatiya universities.
Personalities like renowned seer Chinna Jeeyar Swami and eminent industrialist J. Rameshwar Rao may also be nominated as chancellors of state universities. The Telangana government had recently amended the Universities Act to remove the Governor as chancellor of all state varsities and empowered itself to appoint individual chancellors to each university.
While officially no eligibility criteria for chancellors have been made public, nor does the amended Act state it, sources in the education ministry said that eminent academics, public personalities or a functionary of the government could be appointed chancellor.
Essentially, the choice of the Chief Minister himself would be final while appointing chancellors and vice-chancellors. Sources indicated that they were planning to propose that the Chief Minister take up the mantle of chancellorship of the Osmania and the Kakatiya universities.
