Karayis move court to contest

The CBI has termed the two as the brains behind the murder
Kochi: CPM activists Karayi Rajan and Karayi Chandrasekharan, the two accused in the Thalassery Fasal murder case, on Thursday filed a joint petition before Ernakulam CBI court seeking to ease the bail conditions to enable them to contest the local body polls.
Mr Karayi Chandrasekharam, the seventh accused in the case, would contest for the post of Thalassery municipal councillor from Chillakkara (ward no 19) and Mr Karayi Rajan, eighth accused, for the Kannur district panchayat from Pattiyam (ward number 9).
As per the bail conditions imposed by the High Court, the petitioners should stay within Ernakulam district until the final disposal of the case. Senior advocate M.K. Damodaran will appear for the two leaders.
They told the additional sessions judge, who is also the CBI court judge, that they should be given permission to visit Kannur on October 10 to file their nominations.
“The right to contest an election is a guaranteed fundamental right and the same cannot be violated in any manner. So the court should permit the petitioners to file their nominations before PWD executive engineer, Parazhi irrigation, for Chillakara ward and district collector, Kannur, for Pattiyam,” the petition said.
Mr Rajan was the Kannur district secretariat member while Mr Chandrasekharan was the Thiruvangad local committee member. At present they are special invitees at the Ernakulam district committee.
The CBI has termed the two as the brains behind the murder. Fazal was murdered on October 22, 2006 after he shifted his allegiance from the CPM to the NDF.
