Serving the right mixture of ‘masala’

The film has a very different story
When cinematographer-filmmaker Laxman Kumar, who began his career as a cameraman with Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu, decided to make Masala Padam, he was quite confident of his abilities. According to him, the film has a very different story.
“The ‘masala genre’ (multi-genre) is unique to India and if you browse what the genre is, it’s unexplained. Also, when we learn filmmaking we are being taught all the genres expect the mixed ones. Masala Padam is not a spoof, but it’s about cinema. I did almost six months of research and made a four-minute documentary, which will be the animated title song on 130 years of the motion picture industry. From the invention of the camera to Rajinikanth, I’ve encapsulated it all. Many leading commercial film directors will also share their views on this genre,” he tells us.
Laxman says his film is basically about how audiences and cinema connect with each other. “Anything that has a good mix attracts us. For example, a mixed lifestyle, mixed psychology or mixed views. Likewise, a multi-genre film strives to cater to every taste, thereby connecting all types of audiences. There are three main characters in the film and they play the role of audience. Bobby Simha, ‘Mirchi’ Shiva, and Lakshmy Devi play pivotal roles in the film. Shiva represents comedy, Bobby Simha represents action, Gaurav represents romance and Lakshmy represents sentiments. So, when a film releases, the feedback will differ from that of A, B and C centre. How these categories respond to a film, forms the crux of the story,” concludes Laxman.
