Water pipe burst floods several Balapur colonies

A six-meter section of the pipeline broke and traffic was hampered for hours
Hyderabad: The main concrete pipeline of Krishna phase II burst at Balapur crossroads on Wednesday, flooding the area and leading to a loss of five lakh gallons of water.
An auto-rickshaw toppled with the water pressure from the burst pipe and many shops and cellars were inundated. Businesses allegedly incurred property losses of over '10 lakh due to the inundation.
A six-meter section of the pipeline broke and traffic was hampered for hours. Water Board officials later shut off the supply.
The incident took place at around 2.45 pm near R.C.I., close to Balapur cross road junction.
The transmission wing of the Water Board is looking into various reasons, including air interruption, for the burst and sources said that this was the first time that the department had witnessed such an incident. Meanwhile, other major leakages were also identified along the pipeline. Over a length of 2.4 km, 41 leakages were attended to, said sources.
Managing director of Water Board, Dr B. Janadhran Reddy, said, “In view of the burst, the technical committee has come to the conclusion that it would be better to replace the 2.4 km stretch (out of 14 km length) with MS pipes in seven stretches, from Sahebnagar to Mailardevpally. Engineers have also been directed to take up rectification works where water entered shops and cellars. The government has been requested for a permanent solution, to replace the pipes with MS pipes in place of PSC pipes in the vulnerable stretches.”
Due to the leakage, there will be no water supply on Thursday in Rajeevgruhakalpa at Almasguda, ARCI at Balapur, Babanagar, Pisalbanda, Riyasathnagar, Moin Bagh, Fateh Shah Nagar, Shamshabad Airport, Midhani, DRDL, RCI, CRPF, Uppuguda, Saibaba Nagar, Shivajinagar, Lalithabagh and GM Nagar.
