US mission in Hyderabad is fourth on visa list
The Hyderabad US consulate issued the fourth largest number of student visas in the world last year
Hyderabad: The US consulate in Hyderabad seems to be the first choice when it comes to student visas. The Hyderabad US consulate issued the fourth largest number of student visas in the world last year, recording a phenomenal 40 per cent jump over the previous year.
US consul general Michael Mullins said the city has recorded an increase of 51 per cent in visa applications. Mr Mullins was speaking to the press on Wednesday during the Universities’ Fair of the US India Education Foundation and Educat-ionUSA. “Hyderabad was just a blip on the map sometime ago and we didn’t expect the post here to grow like this. The first three cities issuing US student visas are in China. Hyderabad is the highest student visa issuing consulate in India,” Mr Mullins said. Asked about visa rejections, Mullins said, “We are in the business of giving visas not denying them.”
As per a US government report, the number of Indian students in the US rose to 1,49,999 in July 2015 from 1,13,649 in July 2014. This is the second highest, the first being students from China. Mr Mullins said engineering remained the most preferred subject for Indian students. A SEVIS report says that 81 per cent of Indian students are enrolled in science, technology, engineering and maths courses.
