Stray animals increase by 1 lakh in Hyderabad

50,000 unsterilised dogs were identified
Hyderabad: The stray animal population (street dogs and cats) has increased by one lakh in the city in the past four years.
As per the 2011 dog census — a survey jointly conducted by Blue Cross and GHMC — the dogs numbered 5,69,513. Since then, the GHMC, following a court order, established eight Animal Birth Control Centers spread over 18 circles.
While the GHMC says it is active at sterilization of animals, the growing number of strays contradicts it.
The corporation’s vets wing stated that dogs are picked up only based on complaints, and there’s no regular drive for this as such.
As per a recent survey by the state animal husbandry department, covering over eight lakh houses, 50,000 unsterilised dogs were identified.
The sterilized dogs will have the V shape notch on their right ear. The life span of stray dogs is 8 to 12 years, while their reproduction age is 6-8 months. The gestation period is 60-65 days and the number of litters in a year is two, while the litter size is around four to six pups.
