Legislators vie to raise new districts in Telangana

MLAs want their constituencies be made districts
Hyderabad: The Telangana State Assembly on Wednesday saw several members vying with each other to raise demands for creation of new districts in the state.
During Question Hour and Zero Hour, several MLAs of the ruling TRS stressed on the strengths of their constituencies as part of their pitch to get them be made districts.
Speaker S. Madhusudhana Chary was surprised to see a majority of the MLAs raising hands and asking for the mike to speak on new districts.
It all started with Deputy Chief Minister Mohd Mahmood Ali answering a question on new districts, stating that the proposal to re-organise the existing 10 districts and carve out additional districts for better governance and easy access of administration to the people was under examination of the government.
This prompted Jangoan MLA Muthireddy Yadagiri Reddy pleading for Jangoan in Warangal district be made a district. Nagarkurnool MLA Marri Janardhan Reddy wanted his constituency too be made a district, as did Mancherial MLA Nadipelli Divakar Rao. Vikarabad MLA B. Sanjeeva Rao too made a similar demand.
Deputy Speaker Padma Devender Reddy sought reorganisation of Medak district with her constituency Medak as headquarters. Though Medak is already a district, it is only namesake and its headquarters is located in Sangareddy, the legislator said.
With many more MLAs raising hands, the Speaker said, “It seems all the MLAs want their constituencies to be made districts. However, it is not possible to allow all to speak on this issue.”
Responding to the demands, Mr Mahmood Ali said, “There are 681 districts in India. The average population for creating a district at national-level is 19 lakh. But in TS, there are 10 districts with an average population of 35 lakh each. This indicates the need to create a few more districts in the state.”
He pointed out that the government has constituted a committee headed by Chief Secretary, which will study the issue and make recommendations for the government to take the final decision.
