Blueberry juice boosts brainpower in children, researchers say
If you want your kids to score well in the next school test then give them a glass of blueberry juice. A recent study has shown that a wild blueberry drink can boost memory and concentration in primary-school children, reports the Daily Mail.
The study, carried out by Reading University researcher Claire Williams, involved putting 21 boys and girls through a battery of cognitive tests on three occasions – once after drinking sugary water, once after a medium strength blueberry drink and once after a high-strength drink. It was found that on the days the kids have blueberry drinks, they performed better on better on tests that involved recalling words they had briefly heard. In addition to that, they even did better on tasks that required them to ignore distractions.
It could be because flavonoids in the berries improve blood flow to the brain and ease the passage of information between the cells. These findings were published in the European Journal of Nutrition.
