CoP lauds police teams for rescuing kidnapped teen
R. Abisheik (19), son of a businessman Ravi Sundaram, was lured into a honey trap and kidnapped on Saturday night
Chennai: A day after police teams successfully rescued the teenaged son of a businessman from his abductors, city police commissioner S. George appreciated his personnel for their efforts. One of the Inspectors had to travel in boot space of a car while another had a near death experience after the kidnappers drove their car rashly after realising that policemen were trailing them.
R. Abisheik (19), son of a businessman Ravi Sundaram, was lured into a honey trap and kidnapped on Saturday night. “During the early hours of Sunday, we got the first call demanding a ransom of Rs 2 crore.
The man at the other end said that our son had spoiled the life of his sister and he has incriminating evidence and would go to police,” Ravi Sundaram recalled the events at the police commissioner’s office on Tuesday.
Abisheik who was in contact with the girl, a first year commerce student of a city college, over phone, was to meet her on Saturday night when he was kidnapped. “They hit me in the car and blindfolded me. They also poured alcohol into my mouth,” Abisheik said.
As soon as the calls demanding ransom were made, the family approached Teynampet police who swung into action. Through negotiations, we ensured that the ransom amount was reduced and then we arranged for dummy notes, a senior police officer said. “The important thing in kidnapping cases is to keep the victim’s family in confidence and our personnel ensured that throughout. Further, they worked as a team in making this operation a success,” said George.
Pondy Bazaar inspector G. Venkatesan who travelled in the boot of the businessman Ravi Sundaram’s car updated his peers who were tailing the vehicle in two-wheelers and in auto rickshaws. “We could not afford to put a foot wrong and had to play the waiting game as rescuing the victim safely was of primary importance than arresting the suspects,” Venkatesan told DC.
Mastermind, girl missing
While city police successfully rescued Abisheik and managed to arrest five accused including the mother of the girl, the mastermind and the college girl are still on the run. The mastermind, Madan who orchestrated the kidnap drama along with his paramour K. Kurshid joined the businessman’s company five years ago. “He came supplying water cans and we employed him after he appeared to be a hardworker,” Mr.Ravi Sundaram said. Over time, Madan gained confidence of his employer and was given more responsibilities. “He was asked to leave six months ago after he became irregular at work,” the businessman added.
Police said that Madan, through his friends in Tuticorin planned the entire operation including using his paramour’s teenage girl as a honey trap. It all started with a missed call and the girl was regularly in touch with the boy over phone for a month until the kidnappers were convinced that she gained his confidence. Special teams have been formed to arrest Madan, the girl Banu and three others, a senior police officer said.
