ALAPPUZHA: The SNDP Yogam has decided to take the plunge and form a political party on the secular plank to challenge the two fronts in the state as part of a third front.
A consensus on this emerged at a brain-storming session called by the Yogam at Cherthala on Monday.
Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan said, “this is not a Hindu combine, but it will embrace all sections of people irrespective of caste or religion.”
He said the representatives who attended the meeting had shown the green signal to form a political party.
“There is space for a third front and a new political party is the need of the hour. But this is not a final decision, there will be wide-ranging discussions on the possibilities of a third front,” he said.
Accusing the media of attempting to derail the move, he said the media would have a crucial role in the launch of the party.
“The new political party will ensure social justice to all weaker sections. The like-minded people can join it which is expected to be formed when the Dharma Raksha Yatha from Kasargod to Thiruvanathapuram ends on December 5,” he said.
Mr Natesan added that the Yogam would not compel any members to join politics as many of them were believers in other political parties.
The session, which lasted for five hours, was attended by Mr Philip M. Prasad, former Naxalite, Mr N.M. Pierson, thinker, and advocate M. Jayasankar, noted political commentator, apart from representatives of a several Hindu outfits, including Yoga Shkema Sabha, Kerala Pulaya Mahasabha, Dheerava Service Society, VSDP and Vetoor Mahasabha.
Mr Philip M. Prasad told DC that he was hopeful that the third front would make a mark in Kerala as the majority from the weaker sessions were being treated badly by both the fronts over the years.
“This is not a communal force, but a force that would overcome all setbacks,” he claimed.
VSDP chairman Vishnupuram Chandrasekharan, Yogakshema Sabha state president Akkeeramon Kalidasa Bhattathiripad, Deevara Service Society state general secretary Pooyapplly Raghvan, KPMS general secretary T.V. Babu and Kerala Viswakarma Sabha general secretary T.K. Somasekharan were among those who attended the meeting.
