Students show the way in documentary making

From scripting to camera work and post production, all aspects are done by students
KOZHIKODE: For the higher secondary journalism students of Koyilandy Government Boys Higher Secondary School, the subject is not limited to the four walls of their classroom. The budding journalists are energised to explore life and places in their region in the form of documentary films.
This exercise is not just picking up routine subjects seen in and around Koyilandy, the students take the opportunity to bring to limelight some of the unsung heroes hailing from the small town.
The first attempt at documentary film making was to capture the life of Palakkad Param-eswaran, one of very few people who still make handmade Tabala and Mridangam.
“We have a strong team of journalism students who are very active in field work and have also shown their talents in various processes of film making”, said Sajith, a faculty member. In the first phase, the current batch of journalism higher secondary students are working on four major documentaries, which include, Palakkad Parameswaran, history of Koyilandy, Ulliyeri freedom fighter Theyyon and Koyilandy cinema and dance director Shreedharan Master.
Starting from scripting the documentary to camera work and post production, all aspects are done by students who are being given training in film making as part of the journalism course.
Talking about their documentary on Parameswaran he said, “It was only after the elaborate interview with Parameswaran that we got to know how these beautiful instruments were ma-de. So far we were concerned about the music they produce.”
