Kochi: Experts failed to detect any trouble in the engine of the refitted barge during inspections, raising doubts of “sabotage” that saw ferry service on the Fort Kochi-Vypeen route suspended for nearly a week.
“They (experts) have cited the probability after conducting inspections like pressure tests. The Kochi Corporation backs the demand for a probe into it,” said Mayor Tony Chammany.
According to sources, nearly eight-litre water was found in the sump tank. “There are two possibilities for this – either there is a damage to the heat exchanger or the engine head. However, during tests we failed to spot any such troubles.”
Meanwhile, the ferry service would continue to be disrupted for a few more days as currently the modification works are on to suit the vessel to ply in the high risk route cutting across shipping channel.
“The docking survey was successfully completed and the barge is currently undergoing modification work. Another inspection will be held in two days before we can give the fitness certificate,” said Ajayan P K, Chief Surveyor of the Ports Department.
‘Pappy’ was withdrawn from service on September 29 after it was found to develop technical glitch for the third time in a month’s time.
Meanwhile, the authorities said the second jhankar, that got drifted away in tides following an engine failure, would be redeployed after repair works on Tuesday.
