The UDF leaders could not even chalk out an election strategy yet due to the wrangling
MALAPPURAM: While the Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) continue to spar over seat sharing, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has gained a campaigning edge with house visits in Malappuram.
Its workers have already completed two to three rounds of campaigning, appealing people to vote for their candidates in the November 5 civic polls.
However, the UDF leaders could not even chalk out an election strategy yet due to the wrangling.
With leaders like Aryadan coming in the open, defending the demands of the local Congress leaders, the IUML state leadership has also put its weight behind the local party leaders.
The Congress even threatened to go it alone in several panchayats, making it clear that they would not dance to the tune of the IUML anymore.
In many panchayats, they compete each other fielding their candidates. State leaders of the principal allies are burning their midnight oil to find a solution to the rift.
“Congress and IUML show their real faces in the local body elections by fighting each other,” said Sajeesh Babu, a local CPM worker.
“They have already decided to fight it alone in nine panchayats. This issue has been there for decades and at the Assembly level, they act as if they are one”.
UDF leaders have convened a meeting on Tuesday to resolve the crisis as the IUML leaders in the district refuse to heed Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s call to allies and his own party to put up a united fight.
