Baina eviction may hit Goa-Karnataka ties

The demand for rehabilitation of the evicted Kannadigas is gaining momentum
Belagavi: While Karnataka and Goa government are at loggerheads over sharing of water through Kalasa-Banduri project, the issue of rehabilitation of Kannadigas evicted from Baina beach is expected to further strain relations between the two states.
The demand for rehabilitation of the evicted Kannadigas is gaining momentum soon after the visit of Karnataka Border Area Development Authority President Subhash Chayagol, who has submitted a report to the government.
Several Kannada organisations are exerting pressure on Goa and the state government for the rehabilitation of the affected Kannadigas.
Kannada leaders in Belagavi said, “We understand that 400 more families are expected to be evicted soon. However, we will intensify our agitation in case the eviction takes place without providing alternative accommodation to the affected.”
The organisations have flayed the former Goa chief minister and Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar for not keeping his word in rehabilitating the evicted Kannadigas.
“He had assured that all families that have stayed in Goa for five years or more would be rehabilitated after identification of suitable land and construction of houses,” says noted Kannada leader Shivangouda Patil.
