Thrissur: Six SFI activists at Sree Kerala Varma College here were suspended on Monday for conducting a beef fest on the campus on Thursday flouting the principal’s instructions and for indulging in violence.
The SFI conducted the beef fest to protest against the lynching incident in Uttar Pradesh.
College principal C. M. Latha told Deccan Chronicle that the suspension was not specifically for conducting the beef fest on campus but for violating the orders of the principal not to conduct such an event.
“We will be serving show-cause notices to members of the ABVP college unit over the matter and disciplinary action will be initiated against them if necessary. All suspended SFI members had been found prima facie indulging in violence by the police,” she said.
The principal said though there was no certain bylaw for the college, avoiding non-vegetarian food during official events on the campus had been a norm since the college started functioning in 1947.
Before the protest, she had told the SFI functionaries not to resort to serving beef as there is a temple and a memorial of Sree Kerala Varma Thampuran, who donated the building, on the campus. —
