Slushy Sunday for Bengalureans

The Met Department said that similar conditions will prevail over the next two days

Bengaluru: It was a damp Sunday for Bengalureans as the city received 2.8 mm of rainfall in under four hours, flooding homes and roads.

Over hundred houses were flooded in low-lying areas of Fathima Layout, BTM Layout, Amar Jyothi Layout, Dodda Banaswadi, Horamavu, Journalist Colony, Saraipalya, Laggere, Moodalapalya, Chamarajpet and T. Dasarahalli. Traffic was disrupted in majority of the areas as rainwater flooded the streets.

The Met Department said that similar conditions will prevail over the next two days.

Bengaluru on its knees as skies open up
Hours of heavy downpour followed by gusty winds changed the Sunday mood for the city. While some pockets received heavy showers since afternoon, by late evening, the entire city was soaked. The worst hit were the residents of low-lying areas. People scurried for cover around 5 pm when it started pouring and many were seen wading through knee-deep waters across the city.

BBMP control room officials said that over a hundred houses were flooded. Most of the complaints came in from Fathima Layout and BTM Layout, they said. Homes were also flooded in Amar Jyothi Layout, Dodda Banaswadi, Horamavu, Journalist Colony, Saraipalya, Laggere, Moodalapalya, Chamarajpet and T. Dasarahalli.

The BBMP officials maintained that were only five complaints of tree falling and trees uprooting from HSR Layout, Koramangala, Srinagar and Nrupathunga Road.

The Met Department said that till 9 pm, the city received 2.8 mm of rainfall. Similar conditions will prevail over the next two days, they said.

Traffic was paralysed as several roads resembled ‘streams’. Two-wheeler riders were seen taking shelter under Metro lines, underpasses, trees and some buildings, while cars moved at snail’s pace.

Water logging was reported from Intermediate Ring Road, Koramanagala, Ejipura, New Thippasandra, Indiranagar, Old Madras Road, Brigade Road, KG Road and Malleswaram.

Knee-deep water accumulated near Byappanahalli and drains were overflowing in the area. Rainwater from the defence land flooded the Intermediate Ring Road and Ejipura Circle, triggering chaos.
