From ballet to Bollywood
Meet Bollywood’s very own ballerina Gaysil Naubert. Having trained in the classical dance form from a young age, she found that dance means everything to her, and went on to learn various other styles like Flamenco, Salsa, Tap, Jazz and more. She’s matched steps with Hrithik Roshan in Koi Mil Gaya, and continues to choreograph for Bollywood movies, and stage shows. Not just this, she’s bagged the role of an ‘item girl’ for an upcoming flick and Telugu flick, as well as Yahan Amina Bikti Hai in Hindi.
The danseuse, who was recently in the city, speaks about her love for the city and it’s people. “I’ve visited Chennai many times before — Marina beach is my favourite place,” she recalls fondly. Her connection with the city strengthened when she acted in the Tamil film 7G Rainbow Colony, in the song January Madham.
Speaking about the beginning of her love affair with Ballet, she says, “I used to dance around at home with a dupatta around me. And once, when I’d gone to watch the dance drama Sleeping Beauty, I was mesmerised with it. I kept pestering my parents to find me a good teacher. That’s how I took baby steps into ballet.”
It’s her dedication to dance that’s given her a chance to showcase her talent in films. On being singed on as an item number for Yahan... and a Telugu movie that can’t be revealed, she says, “I want to bring in my own style of dance — sensual yet classy,” explains Gaysil. “I don’t think item numbers are derogatory to a woman — look at ladies like Madhuri Dixit or Helen who would pull of classical or belly dancing with the same amount of ease and grace. I want to be like them. Sensual item songs need not be vulgar or cheap, and this is what I want to prove through my skills,” she signs off.
