Shashank Manohar set for coronation

Manohar will be formally appointed president at the Special General Body

Mumbai: Shashank Manohar is all set to be appointed BCCI president for a second time after the Nagpur-based lawyer emerged as the sole candidate for the top post. A preferred choice of the majority of the 30 full members, the decks were cleared on Saturday when all six associations from the East Zone nominated him..

Manohar will be formally appointed president at the Special General Body to be convened here at the BCCI Cricket Centre on Sunday. While no former BCCI president has been elected at an SGM, the move was necessitated when Jagmohan Dalmiya passed away while in office.

No Srinivasan at SGM
Sunday’s SGM is expected to be a short affair as former president N. Srinivasan has chosen to skip the important meeting. The TNCA will be represented by one of its vice-presidents, P.S. Raman.

The former BCCI secretary and IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla will represent UPCA. The National Cricket Club will be represented by Dalmiya’s son Avishek. President Sourav Ganguly will be the representative of the Cricket Association of Bengal. The former India captain said he expected Manohar to do a fine job. “A lot of important people have led BCCI in the past and Manohar has also done it quite well. I am sure he will do a good job.”

He added that East Zone supporting Manohar and instead not naming anyone of their own was done in the best interest of the game. “As you know, Jagmohan Dalmiya’s demise has brought unexpected circumstances for all of us, so we did things which were in the best interests for everyone.”

Another heavyweight Sharad Pawar will be representing the MCA while seasoned administrator Niranjan Shah will represent the Saurashtra Cricket Association. BJP president Amit Shah’s son Jay will be representing the Gujarat Cricket Association. BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry will represent Haryana.

The Hyderabad Cricket Association and the Karnataka State Cricket Association will be represented by Arshad Ayub and Brijesh Patel respectively. It was understood that Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association will not be allowed owing to internal disputes in the association.
