Chennai may have scattered rainfall

Met department maintained that thundershowers are likely to occur at most parts of Northern TN and Pondicherry

Chennai: Chennai witnessed a partly cloudy Saturday due to east-west oriented shear winds that blew between 3 to 5 km above ground level. Met department maintained that thundershowers are likely to occur at most parts of Northern TN and Pondicherry.

"At present, we are receiving convective rainfall that regularly occurs ahead of northeast monsoon that is to start from mid-October," said S.R. Ramanan, director, regional meteorological department, Chennai.

In the coming days, the city may receive scattered rainfall and later isolated rains. Northern parts of the state may receive more rains compared with the south, he said. These convective showers that occur during the night are due to the day time heat and atmospheric instability, weather officials said. Even as the day saw an average temperature of 32 degree Celsius, temperature levels dropped to 29 degrees by evening.

Places like Kelambakkam and Ponneri in Kaanchepuram and Tiruvallur districts received rainfall measuring nine centimeters on Saturday. Weather bloggers observed that the current climatic pattern is a transition phase that occurs between the southwest monsoon and the northeast monsoon.
