Dowry harassment: Woman constable hangs self
KALABURAGI: A woman constable at the Miryan police station in Chincholi taluk has hanged herself, allegedly due to harassment from her husband and in laws.
Umadevi (22), who was appointed constable in 2010, was married to Umesh Shikari, an assistant lecturer at a private college in Kalaburagi in May. At the time of marriage, Umesh was given four tolas of gold and some other household items. A motorbike was promised, but was not given by Umadevi’s family as they were stretched for money, the police said.
After the marriage, Umadevi had applied for one month leave to be with her husband. After working for some time, she again applied for two months leave. During this period, differences reportedly cropped up between the couple over her job and also her family’s failure to get him a bike.
She had joined back work only five days ago. On Friday evening after duty, she returned to her quarters and hanged herself. Following a complaint by the victim’s mother, the police have arrested Umesh on charges of dowry harassment.
